About Kinnari

I started my career as an emerging markets project finance lawyer in private legal practice working in London, Hong Kong and Singapore and acting for companies and a variety of financial institutions. My thirst for a broader and deeper understanding of the role of law in development led me to undertake legal capacity building projects in West Africa advising government ministries, and further studies through a master’s in development studies and a PhD in law. I am widely published. My book is a conscious and original account of the implementation of indigenous rights to land in transnational investment projects. You can read what people say about my book here.

I have project managed and coordinated a large publicly funded research project on the rule of law, private sector development and sustainability. I am appointed as an expert in international law, land rights and indigenous rights with the Independent Redress Mechanism of the Green Climate Fund. I have worked as senior legal advisor at Norinchukin Bank, one of Japan’s largest financial institutions which supports Japan’s agricultural, forestry and fishery industries. I was a key contributor to the opening of the bank’s wholly own banking subsidiary in Amsterdam: Norinchukin Bank Europe N.V. I assisted in the set-up of the bank’s international project finance portfolio, corporate lending and sustainable finance practice and provided key legal know how into developing and drafting related compliance policies & procedures relating to financial & economic crime, anti-bribery and corruption, sustainability and tax integrity. I acted as a sparring partner and horizon scanner for Front Office and the Board on developing topics of ESG and Sustainability.

I have a truly multidimensional and people focused approach towards understanding complex legal, policy and governance issues. I bring to bear strong & diverse professional networks which I have nurtured over many years. Being more than a business and finance lawyer, I see the increasingly complex legal and social context and higher societal expectations in which businesses are operating today. I stand for professionalism, analysis, long-term partnerships and empathy. I work with experienced lawyers and researchers who share my values for doing people centred ESG law through trust, passion, openness, creativity and collaboration.

I divide my time between the Hague and London.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to talking to you!
